Nsanje District Council has handed over two market shelters, slaughterhouse and butchery at Tengani Market to communities.

The facilities were constructed under the Governance to Enable Services Delivery project to the tune of K91.1 million to improve trade in Traditional Authority Tengani in the district.

Speaking during the handover on Sunday, Nsanje District Council chairperson Mike Kafalachi said plans were underway to electrify and install potable water facilities at the market.

“I ask communities to take care of the facility,” he said.

Senior Chief Tengani thanked the council for handing over the facilities, saying they will boost trade in the area.

“As you can see, the market is located at a vantage place, near the M1 and the Bangula-Marka railway, which will help traders using both modes of transport,” he said.

Tengani Area Development Committee vice-secretary Pitilizani Harrison asked people to take ownership of the market, saying government spent a lot of money to construct the structures.

He said the market will help people sell their commodities easily.

Tengani Market chairperson Elias Bauleni asked authorities and duty-bearers to support them with soft loans because their businesses were affected by Cyclone Freddy.

“We lost our goods during the disaster. We will need capital to boost our businesses,” he said.

The two market shelters were constructed by Mponya Building Contractors and General Civil Works while the butchery and slaughterhouse contracts were awarded to Mphatso Suppliers and Building Contractors
